Toilet Block Transformation

Esher High School | Surrey

CID Study Space were asked to undertake a refurbishment of an existing toilet block. Unfortunately a recent TikTok craze had resulted in the toilets being vandalized. Large portions of the walls had been badly damaged as seen in the photos. The vanity unit had also been destroyed as had the cubicles. It was important that the block was safe, hygienic and useable for the start of term. We also needed to make the necessary adjustments to prevent the toilets being vandalized again.

Open and Visible Design

One of the first steps taken was to widen the entrance to the toilets and completely remove the door. This open design not only makes the space more inviting but also allows staff to have a clear line of sight into the facilities. Increased visibility acts as a deterrent to misbehavior and promotes a sense of accountability among the students. After checking the structure of the wall we found it was not weight bearing and the adjustments to the opening were made without a lintel.

Enhanced Monitoring

To further improve supervision, CID Study Space cut back the area of the wall around the basins. This modification ensures that staff can easily check that the facilities are being used properly and responsibly. We installed new vanity sections to repair the existing unit without the cost of a completely new unit.

Anti- vandal Cubicles

Recognizing the need for robust, durable solutions, we replaced the cubicles with an anti-vandal system. This change significantly reduces the likelihood of further damage and ensures that the facilities remain functional for the long term.

Electrical Upgrades

The refurbishment project also included work on the electrical systems. Lighting had to be rearranged to accommodate the new open configuration. Additionally, several defective light fixtures were replaced to ensure that the toilets are well-lit and safe for use.

A Fresh Look

Finally, CID Study Space applied a fresh coat of Eggshell paint to the toilets. New vinyl flooring was installed. The vibrant, clean appearance not only restores the aesthetic appeal but hopefully instills a sense of pride among the students and deters further damage being caused.
