Start to Completion

Refreshing the Classrooms

Both classrooms received new flooring, ceiling tiles and decoration, creating a coordinated finish across the teaching spaces.

The existing suspended ceiling grids were retained and repaired, with additional cross tees installed to accommodate new 600 × 600 mm white ceiling tiles. This refreshed the ceilings while making use of the existing framework.

Walls were prepared and redecorated in Dulux Diamond Matt Magnolia, with existing woodwork also prepared and repainted. The neutral backdrop gives the classrooms a lighter appearance and allows pupils’ work and teaching displays to stand out.

Interface carpet tiles were combined with Polyflor Colonia Oxford Maple flooring, providing a mix of carpeted teaching space and easily maintained surfaces. Entrance matting beside the playground doors helps manage dirt brought in from outside.

Integrated Teaching Walls and Storage

A new teaching wall was installed in each classroom, bringing teaching resources, equipment and storage together in one organised area.

Finished in light grey with blue tray inserts, the units combine sliding cupboard doors, shelving and space for the classroom screen. Concealed storage keeps resources close at hand, while pull-out trays make smaller materials easy to organise and access.

Additional storage improvements included cupboards fitted with adjustable twin-slot shelving, alongside shoe storage and ToughHook coat rails with dark grey hooks and oak backboards. These features help give pupils’ belongings a clear place within the classroom layout.

Reconfiguring the Toilet Block

The toilet refurbishment involved substantial changes to the existing layout as well as the replacement of fixtures and finishes.

Existing toilets, cubicles and wall tiles were stripped out, and a blockwork store cupboard was removed to accommodate the revised arrangement. New openings and stud partitions formed two WC areas and additional storage cupboards, making better use of the space between the classrooms.

Four junior toilets were installed with new cubicles, handwashing facilities, paper towel dispensers and privacy screens. SoundBlock boards and insulation within the new partitions help limit sound transfer between the washrooms and adjoining spaces.

Practical Finishes for Everyday Use

The specification brought together materials selected for the demands of a busy primary school.

Altro Walkway safety flooring was used in the toilet areas, with tiled walls behind the toilets and painted finishes above. The cubicles combine a light timber-effect finish with neutral dividing panels and stainless steel ironmongery.

Across the classrooms, washable paint, replaceable carpet tiles and resilient flooring support routine cleaning and maintenance. The coordinated palette of warm neutrals, timber effects and blue storage trays creates a consistent appearance throughout.

Coordinating the Refurbishment

CID Studyspace brought the building alterations, plumbing, fitted storage and interior finishes together within one coordinated programme.

The work included adapting services to the revised toilet layout, forming new partitions and access openings, and making good surrounding surfaces before completing the finishes. Retaining and repairing the existing ceiling grids also reduced the amount of replacement material required.

Final Thoughts

The completed refurbishment has given Shelley Primary School two refreshed classrooms, improved pupil toilets and more organised storage. By combining layout changes with durable finishes and integrated teaching facilities, CID Studyspace created practical, welcoming spaces that support teaching, learning and the everyday routines of younger pupils.

“Someone who clearly understands boys that age has helped design a space for them to feel as cosy and comfortable as possible, with lots of really thoughtful small details. They have the capacity to be sociable, but also to have some privacy and quiet. I sat on my son's bed, and it was so comfortable, I had to resist the urge to have a quick lie down!”
